A student from Saint-Jean-de-Luz gives her name to a new marine species discovered by EPOC researchers

On Thursday 2 July 2026, the town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz welcomed pupils taking part in the Aires Marines Éducatives (AME) programme, an initiative designed to raise awareness among the younger generation about the coast and its conservation.

On this occasion, a pupil from the Sainte-Famille Urquijo school was presented with a symbolic trophy for having had the privilege of lending her name to a new marine species discovered off the coast of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

This discovery followed a day of science activities organised on 5 January 2026 on the Grande Plage, bringing together pupils from schools in Saint-Jean-de-Luz for workshops on marine biodiversity. Researchers Benoît Gouillieux, a research engineer at EPOC (University of Bordeaux), and Marie-Noëlle de Casamajor (Ifremer), presented the results of their research conducted on the Arroka shoals to the pupils.

Their work led to the identification of four new species of amphipods – small marine crustaceans – off the coast of the Basque Country.

This initiative helped to forge a tangible link between the pupils and the scientists, whilst encouraging the observation and protection of marine ecosystems.
