Researchers from the EPOC Laboratory and Ifremer have published the Emergent’Sea report online, demonstrating the extent of this contamination, which affects the entire water cycle.

Objective: to investigate the presence of pesticides and pharmaceutical substances in seawater and shellfish along the metropolitan coastline.
This report identifies several substances, highlighting the extent of chemical contamination in the marine environment and the need to improve monitoring of these substances and assess their effects on biodiversity and human health.
An article in the newspaper Le Monde highlights the work carried out on chemical contamination of the French coastline.
“We were able to analyse the passive samplers because we relied on EPOC’s state-of-the-art instrumental platforms: our experimental sciences require high-level technology — without these platforms, this work would be impossible. We also capitalised on several theses from the University of Bordeaux that were started about ten years ago, which have advanced the tool and enabled new developments: this is the result of the work of several generations of doctoral students.”
